Earthquake near Bombay Beach Town of Southern California
Bombay Beach woke up to 2 seismic calls, Tuesday morning. Reports say that a moderate earthquake struck the Salton Sea surroundings. There have been no immediate reports of damages; human or property though.
The Imperial County in the Southern California is where the earthquake struck in a magnitude measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale. It was around 5:00 a.m. early Tuesday morning at 3-1/2 miles depth according to US Geological Survey seismologist Amy Vaughn.
The earthquake was centered at a distance of 5 km south of Bombay Beach. The town is on east 90 miles off San Diego.
Much before 5 minutes from the first earthquake, another one with 3.0 magnitude shook and immediately a less intense 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck around northern side a few miles off.
Bombay Beach assumed some interest for geologists as the town was struck by many small earthquakes during the last weekend. The seismic scientists are watching on the activity as the town is close to San Andreas which never witnessed one in the last 3 centuries. According to researchers a small disturbance here in San Andreas could lead to a seismic disaster that could eventually result in large damage to property and human life.
