Delhi DareDevils Team – IPL 2009
After a good start to their first season, the Delhi DareDevils had ended up running into some roadblocks due to issues like tactical failures and having a rather top-heavy batting line-up. While it remains to be seen whether the
normally laidback Virender Sehwag has gained anything from this experience to be able to use and prop up his captaincy skills the auction this year did help the team strengthen their batting line-up.
Dave Warner had yet to debut for Australia when he was chosen for DD, and then went on to smash a 43-ball 89 in a T20 match against South Africa. To buffer the middle-order, Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah, both make it to the squad, though it remains to be seen which of them would actually go on to play. Shah had shown in the ODI series against India last year that he can tonk the ball hard, while the all-round skills of Collingwood would be one to look out for.
However, the biggest surprise to me was the swap of Shikhar Dhawan for Ashish Nehra (who played for Mumbai Indians earlier). Dhawan would have made it the starting eleven on most occasions and his batting would allow the other flamboyant players to play their strokes without worrying too much about wickets going down in a hurry. What could have tilted the scales in Nehra’s favor would have been his form last year and the fact that only four foreigners can make it to the starting eleven; effectively meaning that Glen Mcgrath would be the only bowler from abroad to make it.
The team includes star players like Gautam Gambhir, AB De Villiers, Paul Collingwood, Owais Shah and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Bowling attack includes Glenn McGrath, Farveez Maharoof, Ashish Nehra and Daniel Vettori. Delhi has the potential to make it to the semi-finals once again given the balance they possess.
