Chennai Super Kings Team – IPL 2009
Under the aegis of a captain, M.S. Dhoni, who has often been associated with the words cool and courageous in the same breath, the Chennai Super Kings had managed to enter the finals of the first season of the IPL before
losing out on the crown in a thriller against the Rajasthan Royals. Unlike some of the teams, the Super Kings’ performance did not exhibit any kind of decay on losing out on their Australian players in the form of Mathew Hayden or Michael Hussey, and this was attributable to the depth in their batting and a captain par excellence.
This year, Dhoni has ceased to be the costliest player of the tournament, upstaged by Kevin Pietersen, and one of his team-mates, Andrew Flintoff, both of whom were bought in the auction for $1.55 million. Flintoff may be present only for a couple of weeks, but his presence should spur the Super Kings on to greater heights; such is his bowling in any form of the game.
Flintoff’s all-round performances apart, the Super Kings possess potent all-rounders like Jacob Oram, Albie Morkel, Joginder Sharma and Dhoni himself, all of whom can turn match-winners on their day.
Amongst bowlers, Makhaya Ntini should find the home conditions to his liking, where as Muthiah Muralitharan could be a difficult proposition to get away.
Kepler Wessels may have been done away with, but in his place as coach, one has Stephen Fleming, another of those cool-headed coaches who should gel well with Dhoni to produce the results that are required.
Michael Hussey, one of the stars of the 2008 season, has opted out to take some rest to be fit for the T20 World Cup 2009 and subsequently the Ashes. However Hussey has expressed that he would be available if Chennai make it to the semi finals of the IPL.
