Ivory Coast Stadium Stampede – 22 Soccer Fans Killed
22 Soccer fans killed in a crushing stampede inside stadium in Ivory Coast

It had been an unfortunate Sunday for all those 22 people who lost their lives in a stadium in the capital city of Abidjan in Ivory Coast. The world cup qualifying soccer match left at least 22 soccer fans killed and close to 135 of them wounded when a stampede and crushing occurred. The stadium was jam packed and overrun with people starting to push against one another resulting in a panic and an eventual stampede in the main stadium ahead of the match between Malawi and Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Overrun is a common phenomenon in over crowded stadia of Africa and when it comes to pride matches like these involving home teams the crowd does get unmanageable.
Sadly the security staff is not deployed in proportioned numbers to meet these eventualities. They are also never prepared for such unforeseen incidents and before they plunge into action the damage is already done.
