Volkswagen Starts Production From Its Chakan Plant
It’s official. Volkswagen will start its production from
its Chakan Plant. The plant has a capacity to produce about 110,000 units a year and the plant near Pune swallowed an investment of Rs 3.8 k crores.
It’s from the Chakan Plant that Volkswagen will be building the Skoda Fabia, VK Polo and Polo-based sedan. From May 2009 the production of Skoda Fabia will start and Volkswagen Polo designed for Indian automobile market will be from next year,” says a statement from the company.
The Chakan Plant is so made to have flexibility to build different cars and it simply implies that VW brands including Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi cars can be built here.
The company sees a bloating car market and estimates that VK will certainly benefit from it in few years from now.
Does it help Indian car buyers? It certainly does. A car like Skoda Fabia will be made here locally and it will cut down the cost of the car. So we can see VKs kickbutting Maruthis and Tatas.
