Microsoft Sued for Patent Infringement
After a long-term battle, that begun way back in 2003 when Uniloc USA filed case against Microsoft, finally reached a verdict in the federal court of Rhode Island. The largest software company Microsoft has been accused by anti-piracy software maker Company Uniloc Inc for infringing the patent held by Uniloc Inc.
Microsoft has been sued for $388 million for violating the security patent. The patent by Uniloc is on the software that is capable of generating unique identities for licensed users, thereby preventing unauthorized usage or copying of the program. Uniloc Company claims that Microsoft has been using security software for prevention of unlicensed use of its operating system Windows XP and other Office products.
When contacted about this big verdict and huge sum of damage Microsoft person ahs been quoted saying “We believe we do not infringe, that the patent is invalid and this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported”. Microsoft Company is extremely disappointed with the judgment and aims to appeal higher up.
This case is reported as one of the largest cases on record in patent law disputes. The sum involved is also a whopping amount and hence further action from Microsoft is likely the next move.
