General Elections 2009 – Gujarat

Gujarat is a prominent state of western India. It is bordered mainly by Pakistan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The name Gujarat derives from “Gujjar Rashtra” , the locals being called Gujjars. It was also known as Saurashtra in history, which forms the western coastal area of the state.

general-elections-gujarat1Gujarat is famous for its rich and prosperous culture and its hardworking and business minded people. The major industries are textile, chemicals and petro-chemicals. It contributes a large percentile in export of diamonds and jeweleries, and also is a major player in the Indian shear market. It has one of the four Dhams of Lord Vishnu, the Dwaraka Dham, as well as one of the Jyotirling Somnath, both very prestigious and importent temples in Hindu Culture, making Gujarat as a favorite religious tourist destination. It also has the famous Sabarmati ashram founded by Mahatma Gandhi, Gujarat being his birth state. Its capital, Gandhinagar, which is named after Mahatma Gandhi, is a comparatively new and planned city. It is located near the commercial capital Ahmedabad.
