‘Megha’, clouds, and ‘Aalaya’, Home, forms the name Megahlaya. The Meghalaya sky is always covered by clouds, truly giving it the name of Meghalaya. It is a state of Northern-Eastern India. It became a full-fledged State on January 21, 1972. The State is divided into seven administrative districts. The capital city, Shillong, is situated at an altitude of 1,496 meters above sea level. The state is dominated by The Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes, which form the largest portion of its population.
