Jonathan Ames’s novel “The Extra Man” is being converted into a movie and the flick slated to be released sometime in 2010 has got some star power to set sail. Latest in the line of celebrities will be Katie Holmes who has finally decided to reenter the charismatic world of cinema.
The movie will be based on an eccentric playwright (without much material success) Kline who is bent on making a living out of escorting rich widows. He has traveled and observed the world and enjoys being part of the transvestite world. The story is also about Louis Ives who travels to New York after being forced to quit as a teacher in her erstwhile workplace; the pretext- trying on a colleague’s brassiere.
While the characters of Louis and Henry are being given a solid shape and a lot seems to be coming out of their roles, Katie’s role seems to be in perennial wraps. The word is still not out whether she plays a love interest or just one of the rich widows escorted by Henry.
It should be a challenge to maintain the pace of the novel and also to keep alive the comic element of it. The independent comedy is being directed by Shari Springer Bergman and is in its post-production stage. 3 Arts Entertainment has taken over its company rights. While Robert Pulcini’s co-direction shall be of great cinematic value, it still remains to be seen whether the adaptation can be subtly metamorphosed when the reels move more than 24 frames per second.
